PIRATE GARB
I'm Melinda, the Pink Pirate. One of my functions at the Pirate Fest is to co-ordinate the look of the Fest through the wardrobe of the participants.
To be a Pirate, you need to dress like a pirate! First off, pirate clothing is called GARB not COSTUMES! Pirate Garb will be worn by Volunteers, Vendors and even the land lubbing fair goers!
Heck, who DOESN'T want to dress like a Pirate??? I hear there's even going to be a Pirate Parade every afternoon and a Pirate Invasion on Fremont Street!!! So you have several opportunities to show off your Pirate Garb!! So let's get goin' !!
Pirates are cool because of one simple rule...there are no rules!!! It's like they say in the movies..."they're more like guildlines than rules!!!" Our job here is to give you some ideas and help so you can "grow" your Pirate Garb. (You mean "grow' like a fungus?) I mean grow because your garb will take on a life of its own! It will become an ever evolving, ever changing part of you. As you grow your Pirate, your garb will grow to fit that new character. You can take it as far and as fast as you like! You can be quite simple in appearance.... or really elaborate and you'll still be a Pirate!!
So let's start simple and grow!! First shop local thrift stores, they can be a real "treasure trove"! How about some baggy pants and a billowly shirt for you guys? Add a colorful swatch of material for a headband, and another tied around your waist and viola' you're a pirate!!! You ladies can find long flowing skirts, billowly blouses, tie a flowing sash and headband and you instantly join the gents in "pirate land"!!
Keep shopping and you guys might add a vest, some boots or maybe even a coat. You gals can find corsets (I have!) and a much better chance at finding cute pirate looking boots (sorry guys)! Guys and gals can both be on the outlook for colorful scarves and pirate looking jewelry!
Once you've gotten the "Pirate Bug" you will start developing your character and growing you garb. I will try and give you some ideas so you can start creating your own personal look. You don’t want to be just a pirate clone or a movie look alike. You want to be your own Pirate! We're here to help you! We don't suggest store bought Halloween costumes for the volunteers simply because they are not meant for extended use. Besides, you want to be your own pirate, not an "off the shelf pirate" !!!
I am listing an Idea Section that explains the different pieces of Garb, some dos and don'ts and even pattern info incase you are so incline as to "pick up a stitch"! There is also a Pictures Section just so you can see the various styles and items. Just click on the PIRATE GARB tab above and a Drop Down Menu will give you access to the Ideas and Pictures. These Ideas will give you a direction to build towards or maybe an idea for something you feel is lacking. Scour the internet for cool looking pirates! Don't copy them...just look for cool elements you can add to your garb. (remember that living thing?)
We will be updating this section constantly. If you have any good picture examples or a cool Garb website, email them to me and we'll see about including them! We want to provide the best looking Pirates any festival has ever seen. If you have questions, you can email me directly at: rjprod_pinkpirate@yahoo.com
I've planted the seed....now let your inner pirate grow!!!
