Legend of the Pirates of the Dry Lands

Picture
Why are there pirates in the desert??? Simple answer..they were cursed! But as with any good curse, there always seems to be a way to break it...maybe! That is why you must come to Pirate Fest! This is the anniversary of the curse. Rumor has it that on the anniversary, the pirates may be able to break it...with YOUR help!!

Come visit Pirate Fest, see what has transpired all these years since the invoking of the curse. So what , you may ask transpired before landing here? well my friends, that is an interesting story.....

It was over 400 years ago, nearing the end of the Reign of Pirates. The East India Trading Company, or EITC and its fleet of privateers had all but erased the scourge of piracy from the Seven Seas. One by one the pirate captains fell to the assault of the EITC. In the end, the seas ran red with pirate blood until there were only three Captains strong enough, mean enough or clever enough to survive. It was whispered by pirates and privateers alike that the three had enlisted the help of the supernatural as the only means to the escape the clutches of the EITC.

In its zeal to rid the seas of the pirates the EITC had not only lowered itself to the level of the pirates but many claimed it had become even more ruthless that the scourge it sought to remove! The last three remaining captains had become know as “Trey Diablo” or the Devil’s Three! "Black Jack” or One-eyed Jack, as some knew him, "Captain Klegg", and the self ordained leader "Captain Hobb" or Old Hobb, which as some well know, is another name for the devil himself. All three had escaped numerous times from under the very nose of the EITC and the king’s privateers, each by way of the unholy alliance forged by each captain!

Stories be told that each of Trey Diablo was protected by a witch. Collectively they were only known of as the Sea Haggs. Rumored to be sisters, each one possessed supernatural powers bestowed upon them through the possession of three mystical jewels that were said to have been plucked from the very trident of Neptune himself! Each jewel gave its witch her own separate power. One to control the winds, the second to control the seas, and the third to control the most devastating of all sea creatures, "the Kraken" feared by sailor and pirate alike.

Each individually had withstood the onslaught of the EITC, looting and pillaging as through they had a Letter of Mark from the Devil himself! At a great cost of men and money, spies for the EITC had infiltrated the individual crews of the Trey Diablo. Slowly information returned that the three captains were planning a convergence. Powerful as they were alone, combining their forces would mean not only the end of the EITC, but some feared the end of the world!!

A trap was set to lure Trey Diablo. Gold, supposedly plundered from the Incas in South America was to be shipped under the guise of three non-descript ships bearing spices bound for Europe. EITC brought its entire armada to bear, just lying in wait to destroy them.

One moonless night at high tide the gold laden ships were to set sail. Trey Diablo used the blackened skies to conceal their attack not realizing those same black skies hid the armada as well! As Trey Diablo attacked they did not find gold, but lead…lead cannon balls!! The EITC’s plan caught them by surprise as the entire armada descended upon them.

Only through the flash of the cannon fire could the outline of the ships be seen. Instead of three gold laden ships ready to be plundered, a virtual wall of ships descended upon them from all sides!  The EITC and its privateers had somehow managed to keep the Trey Diablo ships apart. Being so over matched and out gunned the three captains called upon their witches to even the score. Knowing that united they would be even stronger, the Haggs each took a position on their respective ships. They began to chant and the ocean air filled with billowing clouds of black smoke and fire. Not just the remnants of the ensuing battle, this smoke and fire seemed to emanate from Hades itself.

Cannons firing, men screaming, witches screeching, the Kraken wailing, the noise was deafening. Tentacles grabbed men and seized them up, while others crashed down upon decks splintering them like matchsticks. Suddenly there was a flash and a whistle from one of the privateers’ ships as a cannonball ripped through the storm towards Captain Hobbs’ ship. As though guided by the hand of God, it struck the third witch just above her collar, severing her head and ending the shriek! The remaining sisters howled and collapsed to the decks... stricken with grief they slowly but deliberately rose from the decks of their ships. Throwing back her head she let out a crippling wail. "A curse! A curse on you all!"

Both remaining sisters levitated above their ships. Slowly they came together hovering above the mayhem below.  Seeking to avenge their fallen sister they blamed pirate as well as privateer! They thrust their hands in the air and chanted,
“Death is too good for you! All who survive here today are doomed to never smell or taste the sea again! You will fight amongst yourselves for all time! The Kraken will hunt you through out eternity no matter how far from the sea you may be!” For pirate and sailor alike, to be banned from the sea is a fate worse than death!

The churning waters began to boil, the sea twisted and a large funnel of black water began to lift and rise until it connected with the clouds forming a huge typhoon. The Kraken’s writhing tentacles latched a hold of anything they could touch and started pulling it into the black typhoon. Men screamed, grabbing on to whatever they could as the ships were lifted into the funnel and up to the heavens in one fell swoop!

Somewhere in a desert halfway across the world the sky above started to darken and swirl. The clouds formed into a tight funnel as lightning cracked and flashed. Rain began to beat down upon the sands. Men and ships fell from this deluge in the sky and onto the land. Horrible screams of men rang out into the desert silence as some were crushed, and some survived. The last thing they saw were large black tentacles receding back into the heavens…

Thus the  Legend of the Pirates of the Dry Lands  was born.
